Chapter 13

“Wake up! Wake up!” Joon barged through the door and switched on the lights.

I squinted and covered my eyes with my hands. “Oh my gosh. What are you doing?”

“Time to get up!” He opened the shades.

“Are you serious? It’s too early.” I groaned and smooshed my face into the pillow. “Go away. I’m going back to sleep.”

Joon plopped down on the bed and tugged at my blanket. “Stop being such a baby. Get up.”

I held on tight and muttered, “What’s the big deal?”

“We have to get there before the tourists start coming,” he said in an exasperated tone. Last night, we were about to figure out a time to leave, before Joon walked off all of a sudden. And he wasn’t even apologizing for it right now. An I’m sorry about running off last night would make me feel better.

“Okay,” I said. “Can you get out of my room so I can change, please?”

He hopped off the bed and said, “Going. Five minutes!”

The door shut behind him. I stretched my arms and legs as long as I could. Probably grew an inch. Another day, another treasure hunt. Normally, I’d love chasing clues, but not with my parents’ lives at stake.

I slid off the bed and walked to the bathroom. This safe house didn’t have much everyday stuff, but at least there was toilet paper and a bar of soap. I turned on the water and splashed my face. The cool water dripping down my cheeks woke me up instantly. Using a couple pieces of toilet paper, I dabbed my face dry. I ran my fingers through my hair to untangle it and tied it up in a ponytail. I pressed my hands down against the sink and looked at my reflection.

This is a new day. Today you will find your parents. You got this.

I pumped my arms a couple times. This self-coaching always gave me a bit more confidence. I needed every ounce of it today.

I walked out to the kitchen to find Joon sitting at the table, looking at one of the books.

He looked up and chuckled. “There you are, sleepyhead. Ready?”

Maybe I was just overreacting to this whole thing. Seemed like he was back to his usual self, so I guessed it was no big deal. I smiled extra big and said, “Sure. Let’s go.”

Once we were outside, I tugged on the door to make sure it was locked. Old habits. Back home, whoever was the last one out had to check the door.

The streets were empty except for a couple cars driving by. I hated being up this early. My body felt like it was going to curl up in a ball and fall asleep.

Joon took a big whiff of air and stretched his arms. “It’s a new day!”

Gosh. He was so annoyingly cheery. No question in my mind he was a morning person.

He pulled out his phone. “Low battery. Can you enter the address on yours?”

Of course I could, now that I had this cool smartphone.
